Person Forward Innovation

April 10, 2023

Innovation has the power to transform healthcare and improve the lives of millions of people. However, too often, innovation is driven by technology, rather than the needs of the people it is supposed to serve. Person forward innovation is a different approach that places people at the center of the innovation process.

What is person forward innovation?

Person forward innovation is an approach to innovation that prioritizes the needs, preferences, and experiences of people. It involves understanding the challenges that people face in accessing healthcare and designing solutions that address those challenges. Person forward innovation requires collaboration with patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers to co-create solutions that meet their needs.

Why is person forward innovation important?

Person forward innovation is important because it ensures that innovation is not driven by technology alone. Instead, it is driven by the needs and experiences of people. By involving patients and caregivers in the innovation process, solutions are more likely to be effective, sustainable, and widely adopted.

Person forward innovation also has the potential to reduce health disparities and improve health equity. By understanding the unique needs of different populations, solutions can be tailored to meet those needs. This can help to address the underlying social determinants of health that contribute to health disparities.

How can we implement person forward innovation?

Implementing person forward innovation requires a shift in the way we think about modernization. It involves moving away from a technology-driven approach and towards a people-centered approach. To implement person forward innovation, we can:

  1. Involve patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers in the innovation process: This can be done through co-design workshops, focus groups, or surveys. By involving these stakeholders, we can gain a better understanding of their needs and preferences.
  2. Use design thinking methodologies: Design thinking is a problem-solving approach that involves empathy, ideation, prototyping, and testing. By using design thinking methodologies, we can create solutions that are more likely to be effective and widely adopted.
  3. Adopt an iterative approach: Modernization is a process, not a one-time event. By adopting an iterative approach, we can refine and improve solutions over time.
  4. Measure impact: It is important to measure the impact of person forward innovation to ensure that it is achieving its intended outcomes. This can be done through qualitative and quantitative methods.

By involving patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers in the modernization process, solutions are more likely to be effective, sustainable, and widely adoptable. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released its 2022 CMMI Strategy Refresh Implementation Report. The report outlines CMS’s strategy for promoting value-based care and reducing healthcare costs and highlights several initiatives, including the Direct Contracting Model, the Global and Professional Direct Contracting Model, and the Primary Care First Model.

The report also emphasizes the importance of person-centered care and the need to address social determinants of health. CMS is committed to implementing person-centered care models that focus on the needs, preferences, and experiences of patients. CMS is also working to address social determinants of health by partnering with community-based organizations and developing strategies to address health disparities.
